We look forward to releasing our annual Backyard Chicken Collection each Spring and, perhaps even more so, whipping up samples to showcase them. This year, we wanted to try something new by combining two of our newest roosters into one gorgeous, marled project, and we could not be more thrilled with the results! Introducing the Mara Shawl, knitted from our Buff Brahma and Faverolle Roosters!

This free pattern from Madelinetosh is the perfect canvas for marling, allowing these two roosters to blend and play off each other, accentuating the best parts of each of them. The sweet ruffled edge presents endless opportunities to experiment with the coordinating semi-solids from the rooster sets – horizontal stripes, vertical stripes, brioche?! We couldn’t resist the urge to create a fade from an unusual combination of Celadon, Spearmint, Pumpkin, and Agate, and we love how the discordant mix of colors works with the soft marl of the full skeins.

The simplicity, generous size, and unparalleled squishiness of this shawl have us dreaming up new combos for future versions (Lavender Ameraucana and Blue Australorpe Hens, anyone?).

You can find more details and photos of this project on our Ravelry page, and don’t forget to check out our 2023 Backyard Chicken Collection here! Our last rooster will be joining the coop next week, and we will be posting our A lá Carte Chickens shortly after, so keep your eyes peeled!
